A comment on Browsing or Drowsing? Wayward Northwest Pilots Plead Laptop Distraction

...a late entry, but "hanging their hats" on the laptop story is tantamount to saying "We, together, as professional pilots, deliberately, purposely, and willfully disregarded our responsibilites to ourselves, the passengers, the company, and any other aircraft that happened to be out there while we ""frolic(d)"" (term used by FAA)on our laptops".
...not plausible, doesn't hold water, didn't happen. THE only thing that could explain everything reported was that the pilots were asleep. Not good! But believble, whereas the laptop story is not.

A comment on Semi Trucks And In Cab Computers

I am guessing that you are mostly talking about Qualcom type systems.
You are correct that many of these a driver can make function while in motion.
I have driven with them for a few company's, my current company they are at this time shortening the cables on them so that they cannot reach outside the sleeper.
I believe this is a good way to solve that issue.
Actual laptops are another issue.
Most drivers do not use them while driving, but some do. Both for computer GPS systems and traffic, news, etc.
I do not think that laptop based systems should be used in the drivers compartment of a truck in motion at any time.
I am pretty sure that a GA law that is being worked on covers this, but I am not 100% sure.
1 sec of not watching the road at 55+ mph is bad news in any vehicle, especially if proper following distances are not followed.
I am 100% for any laws on cars and trucks that strive to solve this issue.

A comment on Older NFL Players More Proof That Concussions Have Long Term Dangers?

1.If you watch the Patriots game tape it’s obvious, Vollmer was wearing a $2 boil and bite mouth guard hanging of his cage.
The week prior, it appeared Neal had no mouth guard at all, like most players.

On field prevention is the only way, helmets have very high testing standards by independent bodies.
Mouth guards on the other hand have no oversight, Cantu has stated, concussion do occur from blows to the chin when the Temporal Mandibular joint contacts the skull base at the temporal medail area of the frontal lobe. He also has stated he would like to see some good mouth guard research. It’s already done:

CTE in this area is a concern, limiting these forces may be the key to protecting High School and youth athletes. A protocol used by the N.E. Patriots idenfities markers that make this energy tranfer more likely. Correcting these biological defects has been found in research to be a means of reducing susceptibility and severity of MTBI due to blows to the chin and chin strap forces.
Many NFL and NHL players are already using this protocol.
