Over time, as part of investigating clients' claims, we get to a lot of different intersections. Places that you drive by a hundred times before and until that first meeting mean nothing more to you than any other intersection. But, learn of someone killed or seriously injured there and the place becomes their intersection in your head.

It must mean so much more for the person or for family members. I know some of my clients will do anything to make sure that they don't ever have to drive by these spots again. For me it is a clear reminder that the crosses and flowers you see out on the sides of roads are linked to the hurt and loss of real people.

It was with this background that I was happy to read that there are going to be construction changes at the railroad crossing site where two safety workers were killed outside Mankato. I was out there in the past looking at that intersection because of a death not that long ago. My expert said there was a problem and it's good to see that the ones who can make a change agree.

This particular crossing sees an average of five trains per day with speeds of 49 mph, among the fastest speeds seen at the county’s crossings. It features a stop sign, yield sign and a crossbuck (an X-shaped crossing sign). With electric upgrades, hopefully no one will have to remember this intersection in the future.
