As part of an overall attack on the character of Presidential candidate Barack Obama, Minnesota congresswoman Michele Bachman is now saying that he is Un-american. She goes futher to suggest that the Congressional leaders are also.

There are still three weeks to the election, so there are still questions to be answered by the actual vote. But, it seems safe to say that the leadership of both the House and Senate will be the same. So if Bachmann wins she will be heading back to a congress where she has clearly indicted those she would be expected to work with. Further, at a time when the country is truly facing some of it's biggest concerns ever, she has raised the rhetoric to a level that won't do a thing to moving the country ahead to solutions. It's doubtful that she will be able to play an affective role at all.

If the polls bear out and Obama does become President, it seems even less likely that she will be able to work with any of those in power. For those in her district this is very bad news. These unsupported comments are uncalled for and do nothing to help the country or the process. There is enough clear political difference that a fair look at the issues would serve the country and the voters much better.

10/22 As an update- here is an interesting historical analysis on the impact on this race and other races in Minnesota.

I know that campaigns are nasty, but she has areally crossed a line, I come from a miltary family, uncles, stepfather, cousins etc. I am voting for obama because I no longer can even associate myself with her and someone should sue her or reprimand her or something for saying that not only barack is "Un American" but in her way anyone who believes differently than she does in un american to. That is like accusing someone of being catholic in the time of henry the VIII when he was the head of the church of england " Off with their head "

I think Bachmann has really just misstated her feelings. Her attack on her constituents is fair and accurate. What she should have said is that by and large the vast majority of public officials, really put themselves ahead of the needs of the America. They are first and foremost interested in retaining their power, being reelected. They engage in pork barrel politics. That is selfish and does not serve the needs of America, and is not in the spirit of what our founding fathers intended. SO yes, they are UNAMERICAN. PERIOD. There is no pro argument for that.

Thanks for taking the time to read my blog. The thing is, that isn't what she said at all. You are suggesting examples that can not be read into what she said. I believe that government is capable of doing very many positive things and look forward to seeing the newly elected congress and President moving this Country forward.

Ms. Bachman said it. She calls for a Mc Carthy like probe of the Congress investigating all "un-Americans" therein. She should be censored by the Congress for unbecoming conduct. The Republicans continue to fall to lower levels. They will soon be in Dante's frozen hell.

I APPLAUD her efforts. There are MANY people who are SEDITIONISTS in our country and in our government. This used to be a serious crime - to work AGAINST one's own country and FOR another! We have many foreign agents from Mexico working in our country for the benefit of their country and not ours. We have MILLIONS OF THEIR CITIZENS sneaking in every year.

GO GO GO Michele Bachmann. True Americans support you in your efforts. The only ones who are against you are those who are guilty of working against their own country.

Zorro seems to be saying that the only "true Americans" are those that think like he and Mrs.Bachman do. Unfortunately, that kind of thinking on both the far right and the far left has given us the polarized country that America is today. People who are unwilling to compromise their principles (because they are completely right and everyone else is completely wrong) leave little room for compromise of any kind. Michelle Bachman was elected as the 6th district congresswoman from Minnesota largely because of her stand on abortion. Her extreme right wing views mattered little to those single issue voters.

I appreciate everyone that takes the time to read my blogs. Hopefully they are reading many of the helpful items available at the Injuryboard. But, Zorro really doesn't seem to be listening to what she was saying. Running for office requires a commitment and is a very American thing to do. I see elected officials that I disagree with in office, but I wouldn't question that they think they are doing the right thing for our country. I am very concerned with the adversarial position Bachman has put her constituents in. I also am concerned about attacks that have nothing to do with the issues and the problems all Americans need to be concerned about.

A recent New York Times article addressed a low level of white supremacist and neo-nazi activity in the course of this campaign that appears much lower than experts anticipated. Who needs 'em? We got a skin head plumber from Ohio talkin' bout "Sammy Davis Jr." and Sarah Palin leading Klan rallies across the American South. The only benefit of doubt that I can lend Palin is that, coming from rural Alaska, she simply doesn't understand the full portent and effect of her accusations and rhetoric on southern crowds. She sure has Bachmann all fired up. Bachmann is just the messenger. The stain of disrepute rests with John McCain, not his campaign, not his advisers, with him.

Interesting suggestion as to the reason. I believe it may go back to the election of Anti Government candidates to begin with. They go in with all sorts of complaints about government. They get elected and become a part of government and are actually in the majority for a while. A conflict comes up because they are expected to actually govern. Suddenly calls for term limits, stopping all spending and against new laws are in conflict with the need to stay elected, getting money for their district and the need to actually pass legislation. Some adapt and others are better off in the minority shaking their fist and complaining.

What is real Ameria or a true American? What is Anti-American? Folks who choose to use these divisive terms without defining them are actually saying more about their own narrow views and shallow intelligence. Ms. Bachman is a media hound (yes with lipstick) and anyone who chooses to play with fire as much as she does must pay the consequences when she missteps. Blaming Chris Mathews is ludicrous. He's clearly leaning left, but he's more interested in a good show. And he asked Ms. Bachman repeatedly to be clear about what she was implying - and she kept digging a deeper hole. To top it off, several days later while standing in the hole she said "what hole?".

Very good point. Thanks for taking the time to read and leave a comment. Her interviews now seem to completely leave out that it was a long interview. And that she said what she did a number of times and about more than just Obama.

I saw this "joke" some where else and thought it appropriate.

Question: What's the difference between Michelle Bachman and Joe McCarthy?
Answer: Lipstick

I hope that the publicity and the public response will ensure that any comparison stops there. The McCarthy event was a very sad and scary time for America. With all the real issues that need to be dealt with, we don't need anything like that to ever happen again.

So those of us who disagree with the far right are unpatriotic (and presumably unwashed as well). What a charming bunch. If that's their America - one which is too weak to tolerate dissent - then I think it is fair to question their patriotism. Perhaps they would feel more comfortable under a despot (hmmm ... Cheney) who can make decisions for them, telling them what to think, what to wear, and when to floss. Despite the "freedom" rhetoric from the far right, their true feelings shine through with examples such as Ms. Bachman's comments. Stifling disagreement is about as un-American as you can get. But I am grateful that Ms. Bachman made the comments - better to be out in the air with this stuff than implying it.

I agree that if it's being said, it's better that it's at least out in the open.

One thing about Michelle Bachman; One always knows where she's coming from. That's more than we can say about most politicians. Unfortunately she comes from a very scary place.

With her recent denials who knows. I'm not sure if this is what she normally says or if it was revved up campaign talk gone wild. As I've said it's very troubling. Thanks for posting and please keep reading.

I think Zorro is spot on and represents the feelings of most extreme right wing Republicans.
I hope that all sixth district Minnesotans will be able to read Zorro's compelling comments, and realize for themselves that what Ms. Bachman said represented her cogent thought process. You go Zorro, keep up the great work telling Minnesotans that Michele Bachman is the one to vote for. The end days are upon us, and we certainly need someone like Michele Bachman to whip some additional paranoia about any opposition that could lead to another Kristallnacht. You go Zorro!

Interesting comment, thanks for taking the time to read and post. I keep listening to Bachman's explanation of what happened and can't get away from the fact that the interview was 10 minutes long. It's not like she didn't have a chance to clarify and restate what she meant.
