I don't smoke, but my dad did a lot. I remember when he would visit a number of years ago and we would sit in the smoking section of a restaurant and nonsmokers would glare at us. They wanted to eat quicker, but would get mad because they were in the smoking section. I almost wanted to start smoking. A couple of years ago that issue was dealt, with as smoking was barred from restaurants and bars.
I remember the days when the smoking sign would come on in the airplane. I was a kid and the place would light up on most flights I was on. That issue was dealt with through federal regulation.
Now the Minnesota legislator is looking at banning smoking in cars where children are present. I remember with the bar debate, a couple of bar owners asking how long it would be before people were prevented from smoking in their own houses? It looks like we haven't gotten there yet.
I remember reading Ayn Rand's description of smoking being holding fire in your hands. Now it is probably true that she was being paid by tobacco companies to write early commercials, but non the less I still thought it sounded cool. Despite that I had breathed in enough secondhand smoke growing up to know I really didn't have much interest in it. Despite all these it seems to me that adding another driving offense isn't really the way to go. Let's continue to educate the public about this issue and maybe even stop subsidizing the growing of tobacco, but it may be to soon too continue to grow the smoking ban idea.

Rand's favorable depiction of smoking was written long before the Surgeon General's report on its harmful effects and there is no evidence that she ever wrote tobacco commercials.
Actually I think there is strong indication that books and movies at the time were writing to sell smoking. Her books were written for many reasons and have been abused in their interpretation. I still loved reading them. I agree with you on the time line, but non the less I did think it sounded cool. Thanks for taking the time to read and post a comment.
The proposed legislation is providing us a welcome opportunity of educating more people about this problem, while many smoker DON'T smoke in cars with kids, too many do. Four other states have already passed similar laws.Bob MoffittCommunications DirectorAmerican Lung Association of Minnesota
Ayn Rand was a smoker and developed lung cancer, so was my father but he died 22 years younger than she did. I am a smoker and I may be in the minority in that I'm in favour of price increases on cigerettes. I'm glad there going up, for more than one reason. As far as banning smoking in vehicles with children, it's not an easy issue. A violation of civil rights ? But who's civil rights ? The child for be exposed to smoke in a small quarters environment, or the adults for being told how to live their life ? Personally I believe that the health issues of the children override personal "freedoms" and am in favour of the proposed ban.
I don't like the idea of making it a primary offense, but thanks for posting, I do think that getting the issue out is important.
Update: The Senate version of the bill was killed in a committee hearing yesterday, which mean it will likely not be passed this session. However, a similar bill is moving through the North Dakota legislature now.
I see that you are supposedly protecting rights, but you need to read Ayn Rand's article, Man's Rights, in the Virtue of Selfishness to learn what a right is. Many "rights" that enable some to rob others for benefits are not rights at all.
I'm not really sure what your point is on the robbing comment, but thanks for taking the time to read and post.I had heard about the North Dakota bill, thanks for adding that information.
Wow, it seems like every town is banning smoking! I smoke a pack a day, but this smoking ban doesn't affect me because I smoke electronic cigarettes! If you're like me, and love smoking (but hate cancer), Don't quit smoking, quit cigarettes! Use an electronic cigarette (or e-cig). You can smoke them virtually anywhere regular cigarettes are banned. What's more, there's absolutely ZERO risk of lung cancer, because you get your nicotine fix without the thousands of harmful chemicals and cancer-causing carcinogens found in regular cigarettes (and save money, too! The equivalent of one pack costs $1.50 US!). You can finally have your cake and eat it, too! :)For more info:More ...
