High Corn Calls For More Safety While Deer Hunting

Deer hunting season is just around the corner. Unlike past years, there is high corn still in the field. Which means that other hunters will also be tough to see. So when you are driving deer out of a cornfield:

  • count the heads of your hunting party before you start shooting.
  • discuss predetermine zones of fire.
  • Always assume sounds and movement are other hunters.
  • Make sure of your target
  • Check the background of any shot
  • Wear as much blaze orange as possible.

In each of the last two years there have been 20 Minnesotan hunting accidents and two fatal incidents. It would be great to see those numbers drop in 2009.

For all hunters, the Injuryboard members have provided gun safety and hunting tips in the past. For each hunt, it's important that the supervising adult be vigilant concerning each young hunter, that every hunter be watch out for them self, for everyone to use their gun properly, and be safe.

Really good blog subject. I've been an avid hunter for years and the safety factor has always been a concern that seems to get passed over to often. There should be increased laws requiring more sophistigated small courses required with the purchase of all weapons. If this administration has it's way, the only ones carrying and owning weapons will be criminals. Sorry, I get a little emotional with the thought of the federal government running anything. Look where we're at now since swearing in that cost millions upon millions.

We were kind of in a spot long before he was sworn in. But that aside, I agree that hunting safety is often not considered. Think about the weekend hunters that drink and throw in lack of sleep. Great person to throw a gun to. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment.
